KUALA LUMPUR: The public can file a complaint to the relevant authorities on any provocative messages or seditious

content they received through the social media, according to Communications and Multimedia Deputy Minister Datuk Jailani Johari.

“If the public feel annoyed by some statement (or content) in the social media they can always lodge a complaint to the authorities. If the content is in Facebook they can write to Facebook or directly to the Malaysian Communications and Multimedia Commission (SKMM).

“We at the ministry will engage with our regulator SKMM and it will act based on request and if someone feels they need assistance from SKMM, I think it will be able to assist,” he told reporters here yesterday.

He said this after opening the International Conference on Broadcasting Training, when asked to comment on the deluge of negative contents being circulated in social websites.

Meanwhile, Jailani also advised the public against making or promoting unsubstantiated statements in the social websites for which they could be accountable.

On the two-day conference themed, ‘Defining Training for New Media and Social Media’, he hoped participants would find the best resolution or approach in tackling issues confronting the new or social media.

“Many media practitioners including from abroad are attending the conference and might share their knowledge and experience in handling social media issues,” he said. — Bernama
