BATU KAWAN: The Second Penang Bridge toll rate will not be higher than RM10, says concessionaire Jambatan Kedua Sdn Bhd (JKSB).

Its managing director Datuk Dr Ismail Mohamed Taib said JKSB had proposed a toll rate of RM7 to the Malaysian Highway Authority but the final decision would only be announced on March 1.

“The toll rate will be less than RM10 but above RM7. If the rate is too high it will not attract traffic,” he told reporters after a media familiarisation tour at the Batu Kawan toll booth on the bridge, here yesterday.

Ismail said JKSB hoped to break even within 10 years with 100,000 vehicles expected to use the bridge daily amid the development of Batu Kawan especially the industrial area.

The RM4.5-billion bridge, connecting Batu Maung on the island to Batu Kawan on the mainland, is due to be opened by Prime Minister Datuk Seri Najib Tun Razak this Saturday and would be opened to the public at 12.01am Sunday.

Ismail said the tenders to construct two Rest and Service Areas (R&R) would be called in the next six months, which would cost a total of RM60 million and to be completed in three years. — Bernama
