KUCHING: The Sibu sub-campus of SEGi University’s Medical School commenced operation recently with the pioneer batch of 39 senior medical undergraduates embarking on the final two years of their five-year medical degree studies.

Housed within the compound of Sibu Hospital and occupying the wing of a block there, SEGi’s initiative was the first private-public partnership of its kind in the state of Sarawak.

SEG International Bhd (SEGi) group managing director Tan Sri Clement Hii said in a publicity release that these medical students will be placed in Sibu Hospital for their clinical training after successfully completing the third year of their five-year medical degree.

SEGi is the largest education group in Malaysia in terms of enrollment with over 28,000 students in a diverse array of programmes across its five campuses located in Kuching, Kota Damansara, Subang Jaya, Kuala Lumpur and Penang.

SEGi also has dentistry, optometry, pharmacy and other healthcare courses among its range of health science offerings.

“An associate dean has been appointed to take charge of the Sibu sub-campus and to coordinate with the authorities of Sibu Hospital and the Ministry of Health to ensure we provide the most fruitful learning experiences for our medical students,” he said.

“Senior faculty members from SEGi University’s medical school will commute to the Sibu sub-campus regularly to teach the students there,” he further explained.

“With quality and top-notch education, we hope to put Sibu on the map for medical education in the region. As a Sibu native, it is the best I can do for my home town,” Hii added.
