Menggatal plywood factory destroyed in fire

Fire and Rescue Services personnel controlling the fire which destroyed a plywood factory and a workers’ quarters at Kampung Dambai, Menggatal yesterday.

KOTA KINABALU: A plywood factory suffered several million ringgit losses in a fire which also destroyed a staff quarters at Kampung Dambai, Menggatal near here early yesterday morning.

State Fire and Rescue Department director Nordin Pauzi, who was at the scene, said the department was notified of the incident at 5.13am and deployed several fire engines to the scene.

“Investigation at the scene showed that the factory and the staff quarters were completed destroyed in the fire. It took us a couple of hours to control the fire due to flammable materials kept in the factory,” he said, adding that the operation only ended around noon yesterday.

Nordin said no casualty was reported as factory workers staying in the quarters managed to escape.

He said a fire investigation unit was at the scene to carry out investigation to determine how and where the fire started. It is still too early to determine the total losses suffered by the company but it is believed to be in the region of several million ringgit, he added.
