DBKU ‘clamping’ down on illegal parking

KUCHING: Kuching North City Commission (DBKU) may implement a clamping system by the middle of this year to curb drivers from errant parking.

Datuk Bandar Datuk Abang Wahap Abang Julai said the proposal was now under study.

“DBKU has decided to implement the clamping system as we have observed there are more vehicles parking illegally,” said Wahap, when contacted yesterday.

He explained the move was not meant to cause unnecessary hardship to road users, but more of an awareness of sorts to motorists to toe the line.

Once a vehicle is clamped, he said, the offender would have to pay RM100 before the clamp is removed by DBKU personnel.

In a related development, Wahap said DBKU would be holding talks with the Road Transport Department (JPJ) to enable the commission to issue summons or compounds to drivers who park their vehicles illegally.

“Currently, the jurisdiction to issue traffic summons lies with the police and JPJ.”
