Detainee suffering from asthma dies in lock-up

GEORGE TOWN: A remand prisoner was found dead in the Bayan Baru Centralised Police lock-up, here after complaining of ill health early yesterday.

South-West District Police Chief, Supt Lai Fah Hin said the 50-year-old man, who was detained on Feb 24 for a drug offence, was confirmed dead at about 1am.

The man, who was placed together with six other detainees including his twin brother who was also remanded for the same offence, was scheduled to be remanded until March 5.

“A check on the close-circuit camera recording placed at the station also confirmed that the man had not been assaulted by anyone while in the lock-up,” he told a press conference here.

He said that family members of the deceased had informed police that the suspect was suffering from asthma and diabetes.

Lai said the body of the deceased had been sent to the Penang Hospital for a post mortem and the case was classified as sudden death. — Bernama
