JOHOR BAHARU: Datin Seri Rosmah Mansor has urged the Malaysian Girl Guides Association (MGGA) to venture into the interior and Orang Asli villages to share their knowledge and raise awareness on the importance of education.

The prime minister’s wife said there were still pockets of children living in the interior and rural areas, who had dropped out of the schooling system.

“I am calling on the Girl Guides to visit the villages of the Orang Asli or the interior to teach children who were marginalised from basic skills, such as writing, reading and arithmetic.

“There is a need to carry out awareness activities or programmes on the importance of education for these groups of parents so that they send their children to school,” she said.

Rosmah, who is also MGGA president, was speaking at the 2014 World Memorial Day and the Girl Guides Outreach Programme in Johor, at Taman Merdeka here yesterday.

She also noted that the education environment and infrastructure for children in the country were reasonably good, but there should be greater awareness on the part of parents.

Rosmah also complimented the Girl Guides for their initiative in training disabled youths with entrepreneurial skills, such as making cake.

“At the very least, we could equip them with the skills they may one day use  to generate their own income,” she said. — Bernama
