Jocelyn Hee an exemplary woman

MIRI: It is a common belief that women are better at multi-tasking than men, and one woman who embodies that belief at corporate and charity works is Jocelyn Hee.

As treasurer and person-in-charge of the Sarawak Children’s Cancer Society (SCCS) Northern Region, Hee is often seen in the news actively promoting a great cause to help cancer-inflicted patients.

However, what many don’t know is that she is actually a very busy corporate woman with a tight working schedule.

Hee has been the general manager of a local hotel here for more than two decades. At the same time, she is often seen running around as the personal assistant to her employer, handling projects, attending meetings and delegating work to her subordinates.

“Twenty-four hours are never enough to handle all those schedules and appointments, therefore, time management is crucially important to make sure I have time to at least have a proper meal with my family,” Hee told The Borneo Post recently.

Even then, Hee managed to fit in time to do volunteering works with SCCS, Miri Sunflower Centre and Special Olympics.

She is Miri Sunflower Centre’s secretary and an active member cum fund-raiser of the Special Olympics Miri Chapter.

Asked how she managed to do everything she did, Hee said it all bore down to little procrastination and focusing on getting the task done.

“The same attitude applies to my volunteering work,” the 56-year old insisted.

Thanks to the modern technology, she added, she was able to stay connected with her associates and team wherever she went

“On the other hand, family time, for me, is making healthy breakfast and dinner for my mother, my husband and grown up children. Despite having a full-time maid who helps clean the house, as a daughter, a wife and a mother, it is still my responsibility take care of my family.”

Recalling her younger days when she was struggling to look after her children, keeping the house clean, preparing hot meals while her husband, who works with an offshore company, was frequently away most of the time, she opined that women shouldn’t confine themselves to being merely a good mother and wife.

They should contribute to the society through charity work.

“Women should step out of their comfort zone. It could be tough in the beginning, but once you get involved actively, you are a different person in a good way.”

In Miri, she noted that women outnumbered men in volunteering work, and they should be given a pat on their shoulder.

“Women tend to be more passionate, caring and patience towards children and needy people. They are often the one that takes care of the details, which deserves praise.”

On the International Women’s Day, which is celebrated on March 8, she said it should be spent not only for remembering and appreciating the great achievements women had done.

It should be a time to “let go” after a long year of hard work, she said.

Every year, Hee revealed that she would reward herself with a three-day vacation with her sister to a beach resort, laze around the beach, sun-bathing, massaging and day dreaming to her heart’s content.

“To be able to put away my mobile phone, laptop and iPad is a true privilege. All my stresses are put aside temporarily as well,” she chuckled.
