KUALA LUMPUR: The Works Ministry has identified the need to build 95 overtaking lanes along the Pan Borneo road between Sabah and Sarawak, said its minister Datuk Fadillah Yusof.

He said the construction of the overtaking lanes would be implemented on the existing routes to enable road users to drive in comfort, especially along hilly stretches and bends besides reducing accident risks.

“Out of the total, 17 projects, involving the construction of overtaking lanes have been built or are in the process, including 10 in Sarawak and seven in Sabah.

“Up to now, five such overtaking lanes in Sarawak have been completed with another five in Sabah,” he said when replying to a question from Wong Ling Biu (DAP-Sarikei) during the Dewan Rakyat sitting here yesterday.

For the long run, Fadillah said the government would upgrade the whole stretch of the existing Pan Borneo road to a dual-carriageway in stages up to 2025.

He said the overtaking lane projects being undertaken or had been completed would be incorporated as a portion of the dual-carriageway’s construction scope. — Bernama
