KUCHING: The number of products created by students of Politeknik Kuching Sarawak for their Innovative Engineering Festival proves there is a great deal of innovation in the school.

“The students are capable of generating new and innovative products that are better, higher quality and can even attracts the interest of the public to buy them,” says Minister of Modernisation of Agriculture Datuk Patinggi Tan Sri Alfred Jabu.

His text of speech was read by Assistant Minister of Agriculture (Research and Marketing) Datuk Mong Dagang.

Jabu added that we all should keep on thinking and exploring new fields to create a creative and innovative generation, especially in the field of technical and vocational education training (TVET).

He urged the students to emulate great innovators such as Apple’s Steve Jobs, who made the world a better place through his innovations.

Mong officiated at the opening of the Innovative Engineering Festival (Innofest) 2014 at Politeknik Kuching Sarawak yesterday. He later handed out prizes to winners of various categories of the exhibition.

Innofest 2014 featured 81 student projects which covered various courses and programmes offered at the institute under five academic departments – Mechanical Engineering, Civil Engineering, Electrical Engineering, Petrochemical Engineering, and Information and Communication Technology.

PKS director Clara Ong Guan Leng said the event was meant to encourage the students to find and try out new creative ideas in the TVET field.

“We also hope that this festival will become a launch pad for our students to bring their creations to national or international level competitions,” she said.

Ong also acknowledged that Jabu’s contribution of RM10,000 last year made it possible for them to run events such as Innofest.
