KOTA KINABALU: Politeknik Kota Kinabalu presented certificates to 1,442 students who have completed their courses in various programmes during its 18th Convocation here yesterday.

Its director, Wan Mohamad Nasir Wan Abdul Rahman, said the latest addition brought the number of graduates produced by the institution to a total of 16,379 so far.

“For this year,  724 graduates were from the December Session while the remaining 718 from the June Session,” he said, adding that they were from Civil Engineering, Mechanical, Electrical, Commerce, and Tourism and Hospitality programmes.

In terms of passing rate, Nasir said 93 percent of the total students from the Dec session successfully completed their programmes, while 98 per cent from the June session completed their studies.

The convocation was graced by Head of State Tun Haji Juhar Mahiruddin and Chief Minister Datuk Seri Panglima Musa Aman.

Musa, in his speech at the event, urged parents to play an active role and not simply leave it to the lecturers to ensure their children excel in their studies.

He stressed that the community plays a vital role in helping the government develop the education sector by providing feedback, inputs and suggestions to the relevant agencies.

“The government is always committed to continuously improve the education system, towards producing quality human capital.

“The excellent achievement of the graduates this year is also a testament to the commitment of the educators in providing quality education to our children,” he said.

Tun Juhar, in his speech, meanwhile advised the graduates to use the knowledge they gained from their studies as a tool to strengthen their religion, improve their relationship with others, and better protect their environment.

Knowledge, he said, should be used to improve one’s self and the people and things around them.
