PENAMPANG: The police and Civil Defence Department (JPAM) personnel foiled a young man’s attempt to commit suicide with a knife here on Sunday.

It was learnt that the man, who is in his 20s, leaped into a drain along Jalan Penampang when he spotted the police at a wooden house at the location around 7pm.

He threatened to take his own life by slashing his neck if the police arrested him. He was believed to be under the influence of syabu at that time and was said to suffer from mental illness.

Penampang police chief DSP Ratan Kumar Singh confirmed the case yesterday, adding that the man was detained for investigation.

He was also tested positive for syabu in his urine test, Ratan said.

During the one-hour standoff, the police and JPAM personnel tried to persuade the man to give himself up but to no avail. He even stabbed his own body several times in the process.

As a last resort, the security personnel pounced on the man and disarmed him.

The man reportedly sustained injuries on the neck and body while a personnel from JPAM Kota Kinabalu was also hurt during the struggle with him.

He was later taken to Penampang district police headquarters for further investigation.
