ICT players urged to develop new aviation-related technology

KUALA LUMPUR: Minister of Communications and Multimedia Datuk Seri Ahmad Shabery Cheek is encouraging information and communications technology (ICT) industry players to develop technology that can transmit signals direct from an aircraft to the air traffic control tower.

He said the concept of finding an aircraft through the Black Box was not only a bit outdated but also had limitations to the data storage.

“Voice recordings from the cockpit will be override with time given its limited storage ability.

“ICT players can come up with new technology. Aircraft manufacturers must attach importance to this aspect,” he told Bernama after witnessing the signing of an investment agreement between Telekom Malaysia Bhd, Green Packet Bhd and SK Telecom Co Ltd.

Earlier, Ahmad Shabery said new technology being developed should effectively result in the constant monitoring of flight data and what was going on inside an aircraft cockpit.

“These data can then be retrieved and analysed without the need to search for the Black Box.

“I believe this tragedy (the missing MH370) will change the way the aviation industry operates, especially with the advent of big data and cloud computing technologies.

“Even a simple change will positively impact the industry,” he said in his speech.

Ahmad Shabery also said in this age of big data, the data itself was a strategic resource.

“Businesses would find ways to monetise it and mine it to make better decisions while the government would leverage on it to deliver targeted services.

“Open data policies will further stimulate innovation by the industry and the public will benefit from this ultimately,” he added. — Bernama
