KUALA TERENGGANU: The Ministry of Youth and Sports has proposed to build a velodrome in Terengganu to appreciate the commitment shown by the state to develop the sport at all levels.

Youth and Sports Minister Khairy Jamaluddin said the ministry was aware of the tremendous contributions, assistance and achievement of Terengganu in the sport, especially so in the Sukma where the state had dominated cycling events.

“In the organising of major sporting events, especially the Le Tour de Langkawi organised by the ministry, Terengganu were a major contributor. Therefore, taking all the good points in favour of the state, I have told Menteri Besar Datuk Seri Ahmad Said that the ministry will continue the state’s aspiration to build a velodrome,” he told Bernama after attending a hi-tea session ‘ikan celup tepung’ at Mengabang Telipot, Batu Rakit near here.

Khairy said the construction of the velodrome at an estimated cost of RM6 million, would be the first in the East Coast and expected to be completed in two years starting next year.

He added that the ministry was informed by the Menteri Besar that a site for the velodrome had already been identified in Dungun.

“Once completed, Terengganu will become an excellence centre for cycling in the country,” he said. — Bernama
