KUALA LUMPUR: The Life Insurance Association of Malaysia (LIAM) announced yesterday its members have agreed to accord special priority in facilitating and expediting claims payment for the passengers and crew of the ill-fated Malaysian jetliner believed to have crashed in the southern corridor of the Indian Ocean.
LIAM said several of its 14 member companies have started to process the life insurance claims the next-of-kin of the passengers and crew on board the Boeing 777-200ER jetliner in view of the special circumstances of the tragedy It said life insurance companies in Malaysia are committed to provide their best support and assistance to family members during these difficult and emotional times.
“The next-of-kin could file in their claims now without waiting for the death certificate. Once the proper claimant has been identified, payment can be processed within a week,” LIAM president Vincent Kwo said in a statement.
Kwo said initial checks had indicated that 47 of 50 Malaysians – 38 passengers and 12 crew –have life insurance policies with 14 life insurance companies in Malaysia.
It has also been ascertained that six non-Malaysians have also insured with LIAM members.
