THE HAGUE: Malaysia has played a significant role in fulfilling the commitments made in the 2014 Nuclear Security Summit (NSS), especially on the issue of nuclear disarmament and the NSS membership.
Speaking at the plenary session, Deputy Prime Minister Tan Sri Muhyiddin Yassin said Malaysia was of the view that more countries should be invited to participate in the NSS to achieve optimum results.
The NSS could also share with them the lessons that learnt and encourage them to adopt the best practices that the NSS had established during the summit.
Muhyiddin said Malaysia was of the view that the NSS could not achieve optimum results unless the NSS members secure the involvement of more countries.
Malaysia had also urged the summit to invite International Atomic Energy Agency (IAEA) member states to become NSS members.
In stressing the Malaysian government’s view, he said the NSS should consider how the IAEA could inherit the successes from the work and expand them in the future.
At the end of the summit, the NSS members had achieved commitments, among others, that many states had emphasised that nuclear disarmament should be accelerated as nuclear weapons continue to pose a serious threat to mankind.
This was in line with Malaysia’s view.
The other commitment agreed during the meeting was that 12 NSS countries had removed all enriched uranium from their territory in an effort to reduce the amount of dangerous nuclear materials.
The majority of NSS countries including Malaysia were of the view that the NSS membership should be expanded to secure greater commitment.
During the summit, Malaysia had an opportunity to share with the Netherlands the initiatives undertaken by the government and its agencies in the promotion and implementation of financial inclusion, particularly in poverty eradication.
Malaysia had the chance to meet with head of states such as President of the United States, Barack Obama, the Prime Minister of China, and those from Australia, Vietnam, India dan Singapore to express appreciation for their assistance and cooperation in the search and rescue of the MH370 aircraft. — Bernama
