KOTA KINABALU: A 24-year-old man was fined RM2,000, in default, two months’ jail by the Magistrate’s Court here yesterday for carrying a dangerous weapon in a public place.

Magistrate Herlina Muse imposed the sentence on Flavian F Counio after the latter pleaded guilty to the offence.

Based on the facts of case, the accused was found on him a 15-centimeter long knife without a valid permission, at 6pm on January 27 at Jalan Bukit Bendera Upper.

The offence falls under Section 6 (1) of the Corrosive, Explosive and Dangerous Weapon Act 1958 (Act 357) which carries a jail term of up to two years and whipping, upon conviction.

Flavian pleaded for a lenient sentence on the grounds that the knife did not belong to him but his friend instead.

However, prosecuting officer Inspector Azaman Hamat called for an appropriate sentence to be meted out as the case involved public safety.
