KUCHING: Sarawak’s fastest female sprinter Norris Foo aims to make another breakthrough in the Sarawak Schools Sports Council Track and Field Championship at Jubilee Ground here from Apr 2-5.

The 16-year-old student, who is now studying in form four at Sarawak Sports School SMK Tabuan Jaya, is aiming to dip below the 12.37s mark in the Girls Under-18 100m event.

“I won the 100m sprint in the Sibu Division MSS Track and Field Championship in 12.30s which was hand-timed, so I am looking to better 12.37s in next week’s competition,” she told thesundaypost after a training session yesterday.

Foo also won gold in the Girls U-18 100m hurdles and 400m hurdles in the Sibu meet as a representative of SMK St Elizabeth.

She will be competing in three events in this year’s state schools championship namely the 100m, 200m and 100m hurdles.

“I hope to improve my times and win all three events to qualify for the Malaysian Schools Sports Council Track and Field Championship in Kedah,” said the sprinter who won the 100m gold in a time of 12.40s at the MSSM meet in Pahang last year.

To fulfill that ambition, Foo is undergoing regular training of two hours in the week days and five to six hours in the weekends.

She is also racing with male sprinters during her training to improve her performance and competitiveness. Foo has set her sights not only on MSSM Kedah but also a spot in the national team for the Asian Schools Athletics Championship in the Philippines this year.

She is also hoping to win medals at Sukma XVII in Perlis from May 24 to June 4.

“I will probably be competing in the women’s 100m and 100m hurdles events,” she said.
