KOTA KINABALU: The board of governors of SJK(C) Chung Hwa Likas has engaged three traffic wardens to be stationed at the car park area in the early morning and noon following the caarjacking of a Toyota Vios with an eight-year-old schoolboy inside from the parking lot, yesterday morning.

Board chairman Chin Shu Ying said the school would study how to further improve the security at the car park area, including installing more closed-circuit television (CCTV) cameras.

The incident happened when the boy’s mother left her car for several minutes to purchase some buns from a mobile vendor nearby, with the car engine running and doors unlocked at 6.10am.

Fortunately, the car was recovered parked near the Welcome 100% Seafood Restaurant at Asia City an hour later with the boy, Darren Chiang Kai Ven, frightened but otherwise safe and sound in the car.

Chin was overseas when the incident happened, but he has been informed and vowed to improve the security at the school, starting with stationing three traffic wardens at the car park area in the early morning and noon besides the security provided by the government.

“I also advise parents to be on the alert always and never leave their children inside the car with the engine running.”

Meanwhile, school board vice-chairman Albert Kok thanked the parents and the public for their assistance in searching for the stolen vehicle.

He also thanked the police for their swift action in this matter, as well as State education director Datuk Jame Alip who went to the school immediately to learn more about the incident.

He also urged parents to be alert of their surroundings and not to leave their children unattended in the car with the engine running.
