MARUDI: Eighty-five men and women took part in a fishing competition organised in conjunction with the launching of the Baram Regatta at the new pontoon of Baram River here yesterday morning.

Baram MP Anyi Ngau had the honour to open the competition. It was also attended by Marudi assemblyman and Assistant Minister of Public Utilities (Water Supply) Datuk Sylvester Entri, Marudi District Officer Mackos Sibong and Marudi District Council secretary Petrick Linggi Taboh.

Anyi said he was impressed with the good turnout of the fishing participants, which augured well for closer relationship between the people of various races and religions here besides showing that Marudi has a big number of fishing enthusiasts.

The competition was organised by Saberkas Marudi to mark the start of Baram Regatta to be held here from August 22 to 24.

The competition was divided into two categories – one for the fastest person to land a fish and the other the heaviest catch in one hour.

The fastest to land a fish was Iskandar Abdul Manan of Padang Kerbau who caught an ‘ikan patin’ in 15 minutes, and won himself RM200.

On the other hand, Adenan Salleh was RM300 richer when he caught the biggest fish (600gm).
