KOTA KINABALU: In less than 36 hours after a woman was taken by two men on a 10km terror ride in her Perodua Myvi car, the police are close to cracking the case with the arrest of one of the carjackers here yesterday.

City police chief ACP Jauteh Dikun said the suspect was arrested at University Apartment along Jalan Sulaman following a public tip-off.

“After obtaining the tip-off, a team of police was deployed to the area and arrested one of the suspects, a 30-year-old local man, around 11am today (yesterday).

“Following the arrest, the police also recovered the stolen Perodua Myvi car in Menggatal the same day,” he said at a press conference at the city police headquarters in Karamunsing here yesterday.

On Wednesday, a 23-year-old woman was abducted by two unidentified men who also stole her Perodua Myvi car at Plaza Juta in Likas around 5.30am.

The incident happened when the woman had just parked her car at the commercial centre and was alighting from the vehicle when the suspects pushed her to the back seat and drove off with her in the car towards Alam Mesra.

The woman however managed to escape from her abductors after struggling with them and jumping off from the moving vehicle at Alam Mesra.

Meanwhile, Jauteh said a massive manhunt was underway for the second suspect, a local man in his 40s, whose identity and whereabouts had also been identified.

“The police have identified the second suspect and it is just a matter of time before the second arrest is made,” he said.

Jauteh added that the police were still investigating if the suspects were involved in Monday’s carjacking incident where an eight-year-old schoolboy was taken in a ride by unidentified individuals in his mother’s Toyota Vios car from SJK (C) Chung Hwa Likas.

The case is currently being investigated under Section 395/397 of the Penal Code for gang-robbery.
