KUCHING: Chung Hua Middle School (CHMS) No. 1’s girls team captured their second title of the year when they beat SM Sains Kuching 40-23 in the final of the MSSM Kuching Girls U18 basketball championship at SMK Kuching High on Thursday.

They were also champions of the Swinburne Inter-School Invitational basketball championship in February.

Led by national youth trainee Khoo Lik Chi, CHMS No. 1, who were fourth last year, got off to a strong start to lead SM Sains Kuching 13-4 in the first quarter and pushed further ahead in the second quarter to lead 26-9.

By the end of third quarter, they were already 21 points ahead and they rounded up their win with 17 points more than their opponent.

With the victory, CHMS No. 1 kept their unbeaten record intact.

Playing in Group A in the preliminary round, CHMS No. 1 opened with a 61-16 win over SMK Tunaz.

They next beat defending champions SMK DPHA Gapor 55-27 and went on to beat SMK Batu Kawa 53-26 to top the group. The semi-finals saw CHMS No. 1 beating SMK Kuching High 36-16.

CHMS No. 1 are coached by Lee Chee Beng and Voon Soon Liong.

In the play-off match played earlier, host SMK Kuching High defeated SMK DPHA Gapor, Stampin 40-30 to finish third.

Other schools taking part in the championship from March 8-10 were SM Lodge and Kolej DPAH Abdillah.

Meanwhile, 12 players were shortlisted for selection to the Kuching team which will compete in the MSSM Inter-Division Girls U18 basketball championship in Bintulu from April 22-26.

They are Iris Lok Woon Woon, Khoo Yik Chi, Regina Kua Siok Mei, Hannah Lau Ruo Yi, Mildred Thian Wen Yee (CHMS No. 1), Priscilla Annester, Dayang Diyana, Jita Antonia Stephen (SM Sains Kuching), Sharon Chua Jia Ying, Ruby Chrysign Dobby (SK Kuching High) and Lee Siew Chin, Thian Wan Lin (SMK DPHA Gapor Stampin).
