SIMUNJAN: A school worker has been arrested and remanded over the suspected abuse of his six-year-old niece, who died a day earlier.

District police chief DSP Choo Yin Kok disclosed that the suspect, aged 46, was arrested yesterday morning and remanded for seven days under Section 302 of the Penal Code for murder.

According to Choo, the victim lived with her aunt and uncle at Kampung Sageng and attended a pre-school there.

Her aunt is a teacher while her uncle, who is the suspect, is a non-teaching staff at a school here.

The girl’s mother was said to be working in Serian.

The incident came to light at 9.45pm on Thursday when police received a report of the victim’s death at Simunjan Hospital.

An initial check showed the victim was bleeding from her private part and bite marks on her hand, leading to suspicion she may have been sexually abused.

A forensics team from state police headquarters has been dispatched to assist investigation, and a post mortem has been scheduled for Sunday morning at the Sarawak General Hospital in Kuching.
