Yap condemns destruction of road divider by Kota Sentosa residents

KUCHING: SUPP Kota Sentosa branch Youth Chairman Wilfred Yap strongly condemned the people who demolished a road divider put up at the Kota Sentosa bazaar a couple of days ago,

He said it was wrong for them to take the law into their own hands and those encouraging them to
it were equally guilty.

Yap added that SUPP Kota Sentosa branch Youth was also disappointed that DAP elected representative for Batu Kawah Christina Chew, who had no business in Kota Sentosa, showed up while Kota Sentosa assemblyman Chong Chieng Jen and Stampin MP Julian Tan did not show up and were nowhere to be seen.

“Instead of asking the locals to stop demolishing the divider immediately, Chew as an elected assemblywoman just stood there and watched as the crowd tore the structure apart, disregarding the safety of other road users and the presence of enforcement authorities,” said Yap.

Troubled by what he saw in the newspapers, Yap said those involved were destroying government properties, which was a serious offence under the law.

“If the locals did not agree with the construction of that divider, they should go through proper and legal channels to have that structure dismantled, not to take matters into their own hands,” he said.

Yap, who is also SUPP Central Youth secretary-general and an experienced lawyer said, that the relevant authorities should stand firm and take action against those who participated in vandalising the divider.

Meanwhile, SUPP Central Youth chairman Tan Kai also expressed his concerns, saying that in this day and age, such savage and uncivilised action was completely unacceptable.

“If anyone could to take matters into their own hands whenever they were discontent or not happy with a policy, imagine what will happen in the future? This undoubtedly will disrupt the social order,” he pointed out.

“What amazed me is the banner they carried and displayed. It seemed as though everything was planned ahead. If the message was intended for our chief minister, why print only in Chinese and not English or Bahasa Malaysia.

“Or, could it be that the message on the banner was never intended for our chief minister and merely a political gimmick, intended to fan the local’s sentiments?” questioned Tan.

He said it was unfair to blame Padawan councillor Fong Jiew Ted for not being there during the incident because he had to chair a very important meeting that morning.

“Where were DAP’s Julian Tan and Chong Chieng Jen? Why no one put the blame on them, since they are the elected representatives of that particular area?” Tan asked.
