KUALA LUMPUR: Family members of the passengers and crew on board the missing MH370 flight must be extra cautious and not fall into the trap of scam syndicates.

MCA Legal Bureau chairman, Tay Puay Chuan said family members who recieved any suspicious email, phone call or text message should remain calm and first contact the relevant authorities.

“They should contact the Malaysia Airlines (MAS) or relevant government agencies to verify the information instead of making any hasty decision,” he said in a statement here, yesterday.

Before this, a newspaper from China had reported that while the search for the missing plane was still on-going, some conmen had laid their eyes on the family members of the MH370 passengers and crew.

According to the news report, the scam syndicate used email passing off as MAS personnel to inform the next of kin that they could start to apply for compensation but the beneficiary must pay a certain amount as processing fees before the financial body could release the money. — Bernama
