BUTTERWORTH: Police have dismissed claims by a woman that her husband’s death on Saturday was due to injuries sustained while he was in detention.

Seberang Perai Tengah district police chief ACP Azman Abd Lah when contacted yesterday, denied the woman’s claims, saying the autopsy report on the 37-year-old man who died at Seberang Jaya Hospital found the cause of death to be lung infection.

He said the man was remanded on March 31 to facilitate investigations into a drug case. While in detention the man had a seizure and was sent to Bukit Mertajam Hospital for treatment.

“Police referred the case to the deputy public prosecutor and the man was released on bail with his wife as surety, after seven days,” he said.

Azman said the man’s condition deteriorated and he was sent to Seberang Jaya hospital for treatment before passing away on Saturday.

Meanwhile, the woman, A Mageswary, 36, in a press conference earlier, had claimed that her husband died of injuries sustained while in detention.

She claimed seeing bruises and abrasions on her husband’s body.

“The family including our three children want to know what actually transpired while my husband was being detained and we hope police would provide us an explanation,” she had said. — Bernama
