MACC reaches out to Chinese community

PUTRAJAYA: The Malaysian Anti-Corruption Commission (MACC) has invited more Chinese non-governmental organisations (NGOs) to participate in the ‘Amalan Kredibiliti, Masyarakat Berintegriti’ (Credible Practices, Community Integrity) Programme at the Malaysian Institute of Integrity in Kuala Lumpur on April 26.

MACC Community Education Division director Datuk Shamshun Baharin Mohd Jamil said this was to enable the Chinese NGOs to be the intermediary in disseminating information about the MACC and combating corruption among the Chinese community.

He said the programme was in line with MACC’s target this year to reach out to the Chinese community as the targeted group.

“It doesn’t mean that more Chinese people are involved in corruption. It’s just that surveys found that some of them do not really understand corruption and how to report a bribery to MACC, let alone MACC’s functions and operations,” he told a press conference here yesterday.

He said that at the event, eight Chinese youth organisations were expected to sign a pledge of Corporate Integrity to combat corruption. Shamshun Baharin said the shortage of Chinese MACC officers was one of the factors for information on corruption not being widely disseminated to the Chinese community.

Right now, the Chinese make up less than 10 per cent of the officers in MACC and more Chinese officers must be recruited, he added. — Bernama
