Four BN component parties object to PAS’ hudud plan

KUALA LUMPUR: Four Barisan Nasional (BN) component parties – MCA, Gerakan, Sarawak United People’s Party (SUPP) and Liberal Democratic Party (LDP) – yesterday unanimously reaffirmed their objection to PAS’ plan to implement hudud, the Islamic penal code.

In a joint news conference held at Wisma MCA, here, leaders of the four parties said the move was unconstitutional and would affect the country’s future.

They cautioned that the move, if passed, would lead to PAS demanding amendments to the Federal Constituition to implement hudud at the national level.

“If the Malaysian judicial system has two sets of criminal law, it will trigger a constitutional imbroglio. In short, it is a road of no return,” said MCA president Datuk Seri Liow Tiong Lai when reading out the joint statement on the matter.

Present at the news conference were Gerakan president Datuk Mah Siew Keong, SUPP president Tan Sri Peter Chin Fah Kui and LDP vice-president Chin Shu Ying.

Kelantan Mentri Besar Ahmad Yakob had announced that PAS would table a private member’s bill in parliament, earliest in June, to allow it to implement hudud in the state.

Despite having only nine members of parliament in total (MCA with seven and one each from Gerakan and SUPP), the leaders of the four parties said they would go all out to prevent PAS’ move.

Liow said DAP, having the largest share of parliamentary seats in the opposition pact, should be calling the shots to stop PAS from going ahead with the plan.

“If they cannot do that, I think they should consider leaving the opposition alliance,” he said. — Bernama
