Four still missing in Mount Everest avalanche

KATHMANDU: Four people are still missing after an
avalanche hit Mount Everest on Friday, China’s Xinhua news agency reported.

At least 12 Nepali Sherpa guides were killed after an avalanche hit the
Khubuche area near Camp 1 of Mount Everest at around 5:30 a.m. local time on
Friday.

The guides were making technical preparations for the climbing season due to
begin next week when the incident happened.

Madhusudan Burlakoti, a joint secretary at Nepal’s Tourism Ministry, said
eight of the victims’ bodies have been handed over to their families on Saturday
morning and another four taken to Kathmandu for an autopsy.

A rescue operation has been resumed.

The Sagarmatha Pollution Control Committee (SPCC) said two injured victims
have been airlifted to capital Kathmandu for further treatment while another is
receiving treatment in a local hospital at Lukha district.-Bernama
