MIRI: The Miri Division Amateur Swimming Association (Masa) are sending a team 24 boys and 11 girls to the 2nd Brunei Age-Group Swimming Championship with the hope of improving their performance.

The three-day championship which began yesterday was organised by Brunei Amateur Swimming Association in collaboration with the Department of Youth and Sports, Ministry of Culture, Youth and Sports, and the Department of Schools, Ministry of Education.

Masa spokesperson Jacqueline SY Pang-Kulay said although the state swimmers from Masa are not participating as they are preparing for Sukma XVII, Masa are hoping to improve performance of their swimmers.

“This is the second time that we are participating in this meet. Last year, we almost finished as the champions and this year, we are not very sure how our swimmers will fare but I am quite sure that we have good prospects of winning medals, the colour of which we don’t know because some of the rules have been changed.

“This is a friendly meet for our swimmers as we are encouraging the younger group to go for exposure. This will help to improve their personal bests,” Jacqueline told The Borneo Post.

The Masa team is managed by William Lee Wei Liang with Mandu Nyangkan and Jilihi Seman as the team coaches.

Apart from the Brunei championship, Masa are also targeting to expose their swimmers in the upcoming inter-club meet in June.
