Afiq, Sharmimi triumph in Piala Persatuan

KUCHING: Abang Afiq Yazid and Nur Sharmimi Sazali emerged the boys and girls champions of the Piala Persatuan competition, the first of the categories competed in the Sarawak Closed Tenpin Bowling Championship at Megalanes Adventure World, King’s Centre, yesterday.

In the 15-player field for the boys competition, Afiq knocked down a total of 1,259 pins over six games to walk away with a trophy and hamper.

Finishing 103 pins behind was Melvin Gilbert. Third on 1,138 pins was Marlon Umak Freddy.

The fourth to sixth positions were occupied by Mohd Zuhayr Redza (1,110), Allexiss Oniel (1,097) and Sushil Pubalan.

In a small field of nine competitors in the girls category for those aged 15 and under, Sharmimi overcame stiff competition from Nur Aina Kamalia to finish tops in the contest over six games with total pinfalls of 1,078.

Aina was only 65 pins behind the champion while Nur Shasya Nazira Sazali came in third with 994 pinfalls, pushing Eleeza Ezzette into fourth place on count back after both had a similar score.

The top three finishers all received a trophy and hamper while the fourth to sixth finishers received a plaque each.

Meanwhile, Nur Haziqah and Asya Dania Azree finished fifth and sixth respectively with scores of 952 pins and 934 pins.

The championship continues today with the players rolling off for top honours in the Youth Boys and Youth Girls, starting at 9am.

It will continue next Saturday and Sunday with keen competition expected in the Open Division which offers a total prize money of RM7,350 plus trophies, and the Ladies competition.

Open to all currently paid-up members of Amateur Tenpin Bowling Association of Sarawak (Abas), the championship organised by Abas is aimed at fostering and promoting goodwill, friendship and sportsmanship among its members.

This championship will also serve as a venue to select the state’s men’s and women’s teams to participate in next year’s Inter-state Championship at Pyramid Megalanes, Sunway Pyramid in Selangor.
