KAPIT: The importance of safety awareness in various aspects of life ought to be continually promoted, said Land Development Minister Tan Sri Datuk Amar Dr James Masing.

Officiating at the `Exhibition and Safety Awareness Talks’ at SK Lepong Baleh on Friday, Masing said everyone should be safety conscious whether they are at home, on the road or at the workplace.

“For instance, you should keep an eye out for kitchen fire, and while on the road do practise defensive driving for the safety of yourself and others.”

Masing added that incompetent drivers should not drive because apart from obstructing traffic, they also posed a danger to road users.

“Many road accidents are due to careless driving. When an accident occurs, the victims and their families suffer.”

On education, Masing reminded parents and children to give education priority attention because it is the key to a better life.

“Armed with education, one can excel and live a better quality of life. I know that teachers work very hard to educate their pupils, and pupils in return should study hard to score good results.”

On the distribution of 1Malaysia laptop by the Multimedia and Multi-communication Commission (MCMC), Masing said they were distributed to schools, village security and development committees (JKKKs) and community leaders.

“The laptops are not meant for safe keeping, but to study ICT (information communication technology). Students should teach their parents how to use them.”

On politics, Masing urged the people to continue to rally behind the BN government for continued progress, especially during the 11th state election.

He reasoned there was no point in supporting the opposition as they could only offer lip service but do not have funds to help the rakyat.

“Therefore, the people of Baleh and Pelagus should vote for BN in the (11th) state election for development.”

Hulu Rajang MP Wilson Ugak Kumbong and political secretaries to the Chief Minister Richard Wil and Wilson Nyabong, headmasters were among those present.
