LAWAS: The Malaysian Islamic Welfare Organisation (Perkim) Sarawak will continue to champion the welfare of Muslims in the state through its welfare and missionary activities in line with Islamic teachings.

Second Resource Planning and Environment Minister, Datuk Amar Awang Tengah Ali Hassan said Perkim is no stranger to the people because the organisation too had continuously assisted the community, particularly those in need of help.

“Perkim is well known because they had actively carried out their welfare and religious activities besides being a forerunner in training OKU (the less fortunate),” he said during a visit by Perkim Sarawak to the village Friday.

The visit was held in conjunction with the 26th annual general meeting of Perkim Sarawak Division in Lawas, held from April 17-20.

Also present were Awang Tengah’s wife, Perkim Lawas chairman Datuk Morliah Datuk Awang Daud, State Perkim chairman Datuk Hanifah Taib, joint chairman of the AGM, Noraini Hussin and Maznah Dasmi, Limbang Div Resident Maria Hasman and chairman of the working visit, Ali Akbar Awang Din.

Awang Tengah added that Perkim Lawas with 400 members is not only one of the biggest branches in Sarawak but also among the very active by carrying out projects such as tuition classes, education and missionary works.

“Every weekend Perkim Lawas organises dance and aerobic sessions to promote a healthy lifestyle among its members and the local community,” he said.

He added during celebration like Hari Raya, they also presented Raya gifts to OKU and orphans, and recently they also donated to the 47 fire victims from Kampong Awat-Awat.

Meanwhile, Hanifah said Perkim is a welfare and missionary organisation that serves all strata of society.

“To champion its main objectives, Perkim will continue to intensify its programmes so that more will also join the organisation so as to serve more people. Consequently it could promote closer rapport and teamwork among the members and the local community,” she said.

She stressed that to achieve such goals, everyone’s cooperation was needed.
