KUALA LUMPUR: The Tourism and Culture Ministry has been urged to act on calls made by local tour operators and travel agents on the exemption of the deployment of a tourist guide on every tour bus.

On behalf of 3,000 members representing the bulk of the industry players, Malaysian Association of Tour and Travel Agents (Matta) president Hamzah Rahmat said it could not continue to support the existing rules and regulations governing tourism vehicles and the tourism industry.

“In a nutshell, the players find it stifling. If left unaddressed, the impracticality of the rules and regulations could drastically reduce the healthy dynamism in the tourism industry, growth and development for industry players,” he said in a statement yesterday.

Meanwhile, vice-president (inbound) of Matta, KL Tan said the calls for a review of the Tourism Vehicles Licensing Act 1999 were necessary due to the changing business environment. — Bernama
