KUALA LUMPUR: A prisoner serving eight years for a robbery in October 2013, was sentenced to an additional six years and six months as well as three strokes of the cane for another robbery in June 2013.

Ampang Sessions Court Chan Jit Li held that the accused, hospital technician Zulezuwan Abd Razak, 28, had failed to raise a reasonable doubt on the case against him at the end of the defence trial.

Chan ordered the sentence to be effective yesterday.

Zulezuwan was found guilty of robbing Lee Keng Seng, 43, off a laptop, mobile phone and hard disk at the Shell petrol station, Middle Ring Road 2 (MRR2), Medan Damai Ukay, Hulu Klang, here at 5.03 am on June 20, 2013.

The offence was committed with another suspect still at large.

He was initially sentenced to eight years jail by the Kuala Lumpur Sessions Court for a robbery on Oct 31, 2013 under Section 392 of the Penal Court.

For the June 30, 2013 robbery, he was charged under Section 395 of the Penal Code which is punishable by up to 20 years jail and caning, upon conviction.

Earlier in the proceedings, Zulezuwan’s lawyer Ahmad Safuan Hazalan appealed for leniency on the basis that his client was remorseful and regretted his actions.

“Besides, my client is engaged and about to get married soon,” he said.

Deputy Public Prosecutor Ummi Aliza Ab Kadir however applied for a deterrent sentence on the grounds that it was a matter of public interest and such cases were on the rise. — Bernama
