KUCHING: A search party has found the 12 students who lost their way while hiking at Bukit Timah in Bako National Park on Sunday, but unfortunately one died.

The deceased has been identified as Lou Xie Ynn, 20, from Taman Bukit Permata, Selangor.

She was one of the former students of Tunku Abdul Rahman (TAR) College who were here on vacation.

Kuching police chief Roslan Bek Ahmad, who confirmed the case, said police received the distress call from a parent of one of the students, who was told that a participant had passed out and they needed assistance to get out of the jungle.

Soon after the distress call, a search party was formed comprising nine Civil Defence Department personnel and four park rangers, and they got on their way at about 5pm.

They managed to find the students at about 7pm some eight kilometres from Bako National Park, but Lou was already dead by then.

The search party took quite a while to bring everyone back as it was dark and Lou weighed 110kg. In addition, the tide was too low for their boats.

The team later radioed for more assistance.

They all arrived at Teluk Lima only at 3.35am in two boats, and it took another two hours to reach the jetty at the park.

Initial investigation indicated that Lou might have succumbed to low blood pressure.

The case has been classified as sudden death, and her family members would be flying here to claim her body.
