GEORGE TOWN: The Penang DAP central executive committee (CEC) is expected to meet on Thursday to discuss the Bukit Gelugor parliamentary by-election.

The by-election would be held following the death of incumbent Karpal Singh, 74, in a road accident  on April 17.

Penang DAP chairman Chow Kon Yeow said the meeting would also include discussions on the candidacy and strategy for the by-election as well as logistics and statistics for the by-election.

He was speaking at a press conference yesterday held by Datuk Keramat state assemblyman Jagdeep Singh Deo to thank the public for an unprecedented presence of people at his father’s funeral procession last Sunday.

The Election Commission (EC) has been informed about the vacancy of the seat by the Dewan Rakyat and the commission was expected to meet this Thursday to decide on the by-election date.

Chow said DAP has yet to shortlist candidates to contest the Bukit Gelugor parliamentary seat and declined to comment if Ramkarpal Singh Deo, the late Karpal’s son, could be contesting for the parliament seat. — Bernama
