KOTA KINABALU: A police constable sustained serious gunshot injuries after his colleague accidentally fired a service weapon at the Luyang police station here on Tuesday.

Richie Belo Asing, 25, from Sarawak, was seriously hurt on his chest but is reported to be in stable condition at the Queen Elizabeth Hospital.

City police chief ACP Jauteh Dikun said the incident happened at 7.12pm when the victim and his colleague, a corporal, had just reported for duty at the Luyang police station on Tuesday.

“Police investigation showed that the corporal was cleaning his .38 service revolver when the weapon suddenly fired a shot, hitting the victim on his chest.

“He was immediately rushed to the hospital for emergency treatment.

“According to doctors, the victim is in stable condition. The doctors also said he was lucky that the bullet did not hit any internal organs,” he said.

Jauteh added that a surgery would be carried out immediately to remove the bullet from the victim’s body.

He also said a thorough investigation was being carried out to determine the actual cause of the incident.

“The victim’s colleague has been remanded to facilitate police investigation and the case will be investigated under Section 307 of the Penal Code,” said Jauteh.
