Cop shot in chest as colleague’s revolver goes off

KOTA KINABALU: A police constable was hit and seriously injured after a colleague accidentally fired a service revolver at the Luyang police station here on Tuesday.

Richie Belo AK Asing, 25, from Sarawak, was shot in the chest but was reported to be in stable condition at the Queen Elizabeth Hospital.

City police chief ACP Jauteh Dikun said the incident happened at 7.12pm when the victim and his colleague, a corporal, had just reported for duty at the Luyang police station on Tuesday.

“Police investigation showed that the corporal was cleaning his .38 service revolver when it suddenly went off, hitting the victim in his chest.

“He was immediately rushed to the hospital for emergency treatment.

“According to doctors, the victim is in stable condition. The doctors also said he was lucky that the bullet did not hit any internal organs,” he said.

Jauteh said a surgery would be conducted immediately to remove the bullet from the victim’s body.

He also said a thorough investigation was being carried out to determine the actual cause of the incident.

“The victim’s colleague has been remanded to facilitate police investigation and the case will be investigated under Section 307 of the Penal Code,” he added.
