KUCHING: The personal computer (PC) and notebook industry in Kuching still sees demand despite the onslaught of smartphones and tablets available in the market.

Kuching Computer Business Association’s (KCBA) deputy chairman and ICT Expo organising chairman, Jong Fui Ming said despite the changing trends, there will always be a market for PCs and notebooks based on consistent demand from offices as well as the education sector.

“As far as we are concerned, the market is still going to be there, just that the numbers will not be as strong as before,” he reiterated.

Jong noted that the PC industry in Kuching has been experiencing a declining trend especially within the past two years, although not very pronounced.

“Sales of notebooks or laptops, as with PC sales, is also declining,” he added, explaining that consumers probably opted for smartphones now instead of notebooks.

In terms of the outlook for PCs and notebooks for the next few years, Jong believes that most of the players in the
IT industry is currently shifting their focus to selling tablets and some smartphones as well.

“In time, I think most of them will actually look into that industry, rather than sustain on the initial industry,” he opined.
