KUALA LUMPUR: Barisan Nasional (BN) is still waiting for MCA’s decision whether its component party will contest the Bukit Gelugor parliamentary seat in Penang next month.

BN secretary-general Datuk Seri Tengku Adnan Tengku Mansor said MCA should be contesting in the by-election as the Bukit Gelugor seat had traditionally been contested by the party.

“At the moment, we have not received any confirmation from MCA and we are still waiting,” he told reporters after presenting the Federal Territory Excellent Student Awards to the recipients, here, yesterday.

The Bukit Gelugor seat is now vacant following the death of its incumbent MP Karpal Singh from the DAP, in a road accident at Km306.1 of the North-South Expressway, near Gua Tempurung in Kampar, Perak on April 17.

In the 13th General Election in May last year, Karpal won the seat with a 41,778-vote majority, defeating the MCA candidate, Teh Beng Yeam.

The Election Commission (EC) at its special meeting yesterday, fixed May 12 for the nomination of candidates, May 21 for early voting and May 25 for polling. — Bernama
