Man dies, daughter suffers slight injury in road accident

BINTULU: A 46-year-old man was killed while his 13-year-old daughter escaped with minor injury in an accident involving a motorcycle and a trailer truck along Mile 7 Bintulu-Miri road around 8am yesterday.

The accident happened when the victim, identified as Anthony Wini Ongkong from Rumah Justin Balang, Kampung Sungai Pengerat, Batu 15 Jalan Bintulu-Miri, was sending his daughter to SMK Bintulu on the motorcycle.

It is believed that while riding along the road which was still under construction, they were hit by a lorry which suddenly overtook them on a straight lane but suddenly turned to a junction on the left, blocking their path.

The man was dragged under the lorry while his daughter fell off from the motorcycle and only sustained minor injury on her leg.

Due to serious injuries, the man who worked as a storekeeper in a hospital died on the spot.

Fire and Rescue Department rushed six personnel to the scene, who managed to pull out the man’s body which was trapped between the tyres.

The deceased leaves behind a wife and seven children.

Bintulu police chief Supt Madang Usat confirmed the case and said the lorry driver was detained to assist in investigation. The case is investigated under Section 41(1) of the Road Transport Act 1987.
