Second string Masa swimmers win Brunei age-group meet

MIRI: The Miri Division Amateur Swimming Association (Masa) team emerged champion in the recent 2nd Brunei Age-Group Swimming Championship.

Last year in their first attempt Masa came second and this year they sent 24 boys and 11 girls leaving their state swimmers who have been drafted into the state’s Sukma teambehind to give younger swimmers exposure and a chance to improve their personal best time.

Masa was led by William Lee Wei Liang as team manager and coaches Mandu Nyangkan and Jilihi Seman.

“It is a sweet and convincing victory this year. We won 39 Gold, 26 silver and 23 bronze medals, while second place winner Royal Brunei Recreation Club (RBRC) won 23 gold, 20 silver and 20 bronze and third place winner, Dolphin swimming Club – 11 gold, 9 silver and 14 bronze medals,” said Masa spokesperson, Jacquelynn SY Pang-Kulay to The Borneo Post yesterday.

She said Masa swimmers also won the best boy/girl category namely Nuri Saadan Khaulid (group 5 boy) Leong Wan Mei (group 2 girl) and Alister Lee Chang Lin in the group 2 boy.

A total of 11 teams took part in the three-day championship from April 18 – 20 held at the Hassanal Bolkiah National Sports Complex swimming pool. It was organised by Brunei Amateur Swimming Association in collaboration with the Department of Youth and Sports, Ministry of Culture, Youth and Sports, and the Department of Schools, Ministry of Education.
