KOTA SAMARAHAN: The bridging programme of Universiti Malaysia Sarawak (Unimas) for its laboratory assistants is a good step to improve the overall service of the university.
According to one of participants of the programme, Isa Sait, the bridging programme would help staff of the faculty to improve themselves with the necessary knowledge and earning promotion at the same time.
The bridging programme, which had its convocation ceremony yesterday, also saw Isa, 52, the oldest graduate, receiving his scroll.
“I hope I have set an example to other younger staff in trying to improve ourselves with the right skills and knowledge. Age is not a barrier in learning,” Isa said after the graduation ceremony.
Isa, who has been a lab assistant in the university for the past 21 years, is a graduate of Science and Resource Technology Faculty.
Meanwhile, 49-year-old Rajuna Tahir said the bridging programme exposed graduates with the latest technologies where everything was now digitised.
“All the analogue equipments that we are familiar with have been changed to the latest technology. This programme comes at the right time where we can literally improve our knowledge to serve better,” said Rajuna who is also a graduate of the Science and Resource Technology Faculty.
Earlier in his speech, the university’s vice-chancellor Professor Datuk Dr Kadim Suaidi, said the bridging programme, which ran from June 6, 2011 till Dec 18 last year, replaced the Lab Assistant Course where upon completion the graduates would be made Assistant Science Officer (C27).
“The Higher Learning Ministry has requested that all universities implement the bridging programme. Here in Unimas the programme is tailored in such a way as to ensure that graduates will be able to use the knowledge in their course of work and improve their knowledge in the latest technology,”
“The bridging programme is an indicator of the determination and commitment of Unimas management to improve the performance of its employees.
“It is also a good practice that we can consider before promoting staff of other department in
the future,” he said.
Kadim congratulated Unimas for being among the earliest universities offering the bridging programme.

The function was also attended by deputy vice-chancellor (Academic and International) Professor Dr Fatimah Abang, deputy vice-chancellor (Student Affairs and Alumni) Mohd Fadzil Abdul Rahman and deputy vice-chancellor (Research and Innovation) Professor Dr Kopli Bujang.
