Plan to build two marina cities in Labuan

LABUAN: Labuan member of parliament Datuk Rozman Isli said yesterday that the development agenda in Labuan would be continued to strengthen the island’s position as a tourist attraction.

He disclosed that two marina cities have been planned for the Labuan. The northern part of island will be turned into a lagoon and a new town would be developed after the Labuan Corporation (LC) has reclaimed a portion of the area.

Rozman, who is also the LC chairman, said the development would take place along the beach in the northern part of Labuan as there were plans to build a marina city in the area to focus on sea sport activities there.

“We want to see the lagoon full with boats and yachts. Another marina city that we intend to build is at a location in front of Tiara Labuan Hotel. We did apply for land reclamation approval to develop the area.

“Even though, the land belongs to the government, other agencies are involved in the application process. I hope there will be less bureaucracy in getting approval to the land reclamation application,”he told the media at the new Labuan International Golf Club (LIGC) here.

Rozman added the marina city would be an international one with water park and resort in the area.

“When the international marina city is built, a three-kilometre bridge will be constructed between Daat Island and the international marina city to connect with Labuan Island.

“We will move the current ferry terminal to Daat Island to shorten the ferry journey to Menumbok. From Daat Island to Menumbok, the distance is less than two kilometres.

“Actually, Daat Island is an industrial area for oil and gas, but the ferry terminal will be constructed at the northern side of the island. The sea journey for the ferry between Daat Island and Menumbok is expected to take about half an hour,” he said.
