Ex-cop jailed 30 months for extortion, wrongful confinement

KUALA LUMPUR: A former police lance corporal was sentenced to 30 months in prison by the magistrates’ court here yesterday for extortion and wrongful confinement of a man 13 years ago.

Magistrate Nur Azura Murah sentenced Mohd Fadzli Dennis Abdullah, 49, to 18 months and 12 months each for the offences after he pleaded guilty.

She, however, ordered Mohd Fadzli Dennis, who was attached to the Bukit Aman Police Station Narcotics Secretariat Division at the time, to serve the sentences concurrently from the date he was arrested three days ago.

Mohd Fadzli Dennis was jointly accused with his accomplice, who was convicted in 2005, with extorting RM5,000 from Lee Seow Ming, 39.

He was charged under Section 385 of the Penal Code with committing the offence at a house in Taman Setapak, Sentul here at 1 pm on Nov 25 2001, which is punishable by up to seven years’ imprisonment, fine or whipping, upon conviction.

Mohd Fadzli Dennis, who was unrepresented, was also charged under Section 342 of the Penal Code with the wrongful confinement of Lee’s brother Chee Tion, 36, at the same time and place.

According to the facts of the case, the accused had gained entry into Lee’s house by introducing themselves as CID officers from Bukit Aman.

They had then ransacked the house and detained the victim’s brother without a warrant of arrest.

Lee received a call from Chee Tion requesting RM5,000 for his release. Earlier in the proceedings, deputy public prosecutor S Ravindran applied for a heavy sentence on the grounds that the accused had abused his power and tarnished the image of the police.

“His accomplice was convicted and sentenced in 2005 but the accused managed to evade arrest until just three days ago (April 26),” he said. — Bernama
