KUCHING: Bengoh State Assemblyman Datuk Dr Jerip Susil has called on the public works department to expedite contruction works on the three-kilometre Kampung Semadang-Kampung Danu Road.

The state public health assistant minister said he had received several complaints from Kampung Danu residents that works on the road construction was going at a snail’s pace.

He noted that although four months had passed by since the works first began, till now, not even 50 per cent had been completed although the road was only three kilometres long.

Jerip said the initial works would cost about RM4 million and it would be gravel surface, adding that it would be tar-sealed under the second phase.

“The third phase would involve compensating the land owners,” said Dr Jerip.

The road will connect Kampung Danu with Kampung Semadang, Bau district and the Borneo Highlands Road.

“With the completion of the road, more economic opportunities will be opened up for those residing in the vicinity,” he noted.

He said the road project was part of the package for the Kampung Semadang people who had sacrificed tens of thousands of hectres of their Native Customary Rights land for the development of the Bengoh Resettlement Scheme to resettle 205 familes from four villages who had to move out of their villages in the upper Penrissen to give way to the construction of the RM310 million Bengoh Dam. — Bernama
