KOTA KINABALU: A wanted criminal who has been hiding from law enforcement for nearly a year, finally surrendered himself to the police.

The foreign man in his 30s was said to be involved in more than 10 burglary cases around the state capital since last year.

Realising that he is being hunted by the police and with limited freedom of movement, the suspect finally surrendered himself to the police in February this year.

City police chief ACP Jauteh Dikun who revealed the incident, said the suspect made the decision as he believed his life was in danger.

“The suspect has been involved in 10 burglary cases around the state capital since last year.

“After identifying the suspect, a manhunt was immediately carried out to nab him but the suspect took the decision to surrender himself to the police instead,” he said at a press conference at the city police headquarters in Karamunsing here yesterday.

Jauteh therefore urged wanted criminals to surrender themselves at any police station or the police would continue to pursue them.

“We urge these criminals, who are still on the loose, to better surrender or face the consequences once we catch them,” he warned.

Meanwhile, in an unrelated case, Jauteh said vehicle theft cases had increased in the first three months of this year as compared to the same period last year.

“Between January until March this year, 59 vehicle theft cases have been recorded with 43 motorcycles stolen followed by 16 cases involving other vehicles.

“Police once again reminded the public to take proper measures to look after their properties and not to take things for granted.

“We also urged the public to continue their support and cooperation with the police in fighting crime together,” he said.
