MIRI: The heavy traffic flow plaguing some 30,000 residents in Taman Tunku areas will soon be a thing of past.

This is because the controversial Taman Tunku bypass will finally be opened to public access starting this coming Monday.

Minister of Local Government and Community Development Dato Sri Wong Soon Koh conveyed the good news during a site-inspection of the road project on Thursday.

The 5.5-km bypass built at a cost of RM16 million was undertaken by Kumpulan Parabena.

It was actually completed in September last year but due to technical issues, the Miri City Council (MCC) temporarily withheld the opening of the bypass.

“I’ve been told that this new road has not been opened to public access for more than half a year.

“I hope with the opening of this alternative road, it will help solve the heavy traffic congestion in this affected area.”

The project had also to comply with the council’s standard of safety specifications.

Regarding the streetlights not yet installed along the new stretch, he said the ministry will look at its budget for its installation.

Also joining him at the site-inspection were Miri Mayor Lawrence Lai and councillors.
