MIRI: The people here are urged to come in full force to witness the launch of the Piasau Nature Reserve on May 10 by Head of State Pehin Sri Abdul Taib Mahmud.

Piasau Camp Miri Nature Park Society (PCMNPS) chairman Datuk Sebastian Ting said those coming are encouraged to come in green shirts by 9.45am and gather at the launch venue – the car park of the old Tenby International School.

“Come voluntarily in full force to witness this historical launch of the nature reserve which we fought for, show the government and authorities of our continuous support too.

Later, we can all join the Piasau Nature Walk, along with the VVIPS,” said Ting after chairing a joint meeting of PCMNPS, Malaysian Nature Society (MNS), Miri Branch, and Paws Miri.

Other activities held during the launch will be an exhibition on Piasau Camp and tree planting.

Specially designed limited of T-shirts of the society will also be on sale at RM10 each.

“We will print only 400 pieces while we expect some 500 Mirians to come voluntarily and join and another 500 invited guests for the walk,” said Ting.

Among the guests expected are the wife of the Head of State, Puan Sri Ragad Kurdi Taib, Chief Minister Tan Sri Adenan Satem and wife, Puan Sri Jamilah Anu, Shell Malaysia chairman Iain Lo and Petronas president and chief executive officer Tan Sri Dato’ Shamsul Azhar Abbas.

Piasau Camp was gazetted as a nature reserve effective April 3 this year, following a strong call by Mirians to conserve the historical camp, famous for its hornbills.

It is also for the conservation of other protected animals and plants and the mature forest which acts as the ‘green lung’ for Miri City and a buffer zone against any tidal wave.
